What follows is a transcript of a conversation I had with the natural language model ChatGPT. In this discussion, I essentially interviewed ChatGPT about itself, to see what it would report about how it works.

In this interview, I am asking ChatGPT questions about its own responses: how it responds, whether it keeps track of its own confidence levels, and how prompts from users impact future responses. I have had a few conversations with ChatGPT that I will follow up with transcripts of, and I will be providing a summary of my findings as well.

Until then, some initial observations from this conversation include:

  • ChatGPT does not, at this time, attempt to behave as though it were a person, or a conscious entity.
  • While many other chatbots have thus far exhibited (or pretended to have) a personality, ChatGPT seems to be determined to ensure that nobody is confused about what’s happening.
  • To that end, it very frequently begins a response with the phrase “As an AI language model,”.
  • My prompts may bias towards this with the fact that I am explicitly talking about its own response generation.
  • On the subject of bias, ChatGPT also seems to frequently add caveats to its claims, especially if they might include normative language about people.
  • I suspect this is due to direct developer intervention that has given ChatGPT some instruction in this regard, whether it is at a code level where it has no awareness that this is explicitly done, or in the way it has been trained.

This interview was conducted on February 19, 2023 using the ChatGPT Plus service, which recently became available here in Canada. It is, by the interface’s report, using the “Default” language model, which was set to the model previously known as “Turbo” as of February 13.

In my second interview with ChatGPT, we will see the AI chatbot make some mistakes, and also correct a mistake I make. Some of its own errors are due to ignorance, others due to the seemingly ephemeral nature of its attention. At any rate, combined with the dialogue from this interview, we get a picture of how much ChatGPT is able to report about itself, and where some of the fallibility that it openly acknowledges can be observed.
